The Shield functions as a localized reality rewrite that prioritizes defense over offense. To cast it, a wizard focuses their will through a conduit, typically a wand or staff, projecting energy outward to form a barrier. Under the Laws of Magic, specifically Equivalence, maintaining the shield costs the caster energy proportional to the impact absorbed. A vampire's punch requires more force than a thrown rock. If the attack exceeds the wizard's available power, the shield shatters, and the damage transfers to the user. Limitations include mental fatigue; prolonged exposure weakens concentration, making the barrier vulnerable to gaps. It also cannot protect against effects that bypass physical space, such as certain curses or psychic attacks. Only trained wizards can wield it effectively without risking self-harm.
